Boreholes Bring Water Relief, Job Opportunities for Msinga Communities

Monday, 04 May 2026

uMngeni-uThukela Water has successfully delivered nine borehole schemes in uMsinga, under the uMzinyathi District, thereby creating 50 local jobs and providing thousands of residents with improved access to potable water. Each borehole installation includes a storage capacity of approximately 40,000 litres, marking a significant intervention in water-scarce communities.

The boreholes were official handed over today, 4 May 2026 to the communities of KwaGuqa and surrounding areas by uMngeni-uThukela Water Board Chairperson, Advocate Vusi Khuzwayo SC. The initiative forms part of the organisation’s Corporate Social Investment (CSI) programme, aimed at addressing long-standing water access challenges in underserved areas.

Providing an overview of the project, Advocate Vusi Khuzwayo SC said whilst uMngeni-uThukela Water’s role was bulk water supply, while municipalities remained responsible for reticulation and distribution, the utility stood ready and willing to assist communities with their water woes.

He noted that the borehole schemes – equipped with generators, storage tanks, and standpipe systems – were designed to provide immediate and practical relief to affected communities.

“We encourage traditional leaders and the community to safeguard this infrastructure from vandalism,” Advocate Khuzwayo said.

A total of 13 borehole sites were initially identified but only nine were commissioned following rigorous geological surveys, water quality testing, and abstraction feasibility assessments to ensure reliability and safety.

Speaking at the event, local traditional leader Inkosi Mchunu commended the initiative, stating that it went beyond uMngeni-uThukela Water’s core mandate. He expressed gratitude on behalf of the community and reaffirmed a commitment to working with uMzinyathi District Municipality to support future water provision efforts.
