Media and Public Notice: Update on damaged valve impacting raw water supply to Durban Heights Treatment Works.

Thursday, 12 March 2026

The site of the valve which was damaged yesterday, 11 March 2026 at the Nagle Dam, and which has affected the supply of raw water to the Durban Heights Water Works for treatment, has now been isolated to allow repair operations to proceed safely.

A diving team is currently on site and has begun the process of removing the damaged valve from the intake structure. This is a complex and carefully coordinated underwater operation that requires adherence to strict safety protocols.

Once the damaged valve has been successfully removed, it will be taken offsite for repairs.

In the meantime, uMngeni-uThukela Water is implementing alternate operational plans to restore the full supply of raw water to the Durban Heights Water Treatment Works.

The damage to the valve has had an impact on the supply of raw water to the Durban Heights Water Works. As a result, there is currently an estimated deficit of approximately 150 megalitres of water per day that would normally be supplied to the eThekwini Metro for treatment and distribution.

Every effort is being made to minimise the duration of the disruption and restore normal operations.

Further updates will be provided as progress is made on the repair work. Residents and businesses within the eThekwini Metro are encouraged to continue using water sparingly while repair operations are underway.
